At Maggie’s Organics we set out to see if it was possible to develop a successful, sustainable business while respecting both the limited resources of our planet, and the rights and dignity of the lives we touch. That was back in 1992, when the words “organic” and “clothing” were seldom used in the same sentence. Throughout these past 19 years we have enjoyed incredible support from our distributors, retailers, consumers, friends and family, all of whom have continually encouraged and challenged us to stay true to that goal. We have led with our hearts, and dug deep into our convictions when faced with unimagined challenges year after year. We have continued to make all business decisions in support of our original goal, whether that meant limiting our product line to items that our co-ops could sew, refusing to move our production to lower wage countries, or maintaining our policy of paying 100% of employee health care premiums through constant rate increases. Our original mission and our continued customer support have led us to develop unique production chains. Though we have frequently lost spinners, knitters, dyers and sewers to the ‘race to the bottom’, we have also helped many who shared our values stay in business and thrive. Our producer partnerships have become more transparent and rewarding as our sales have grown. Recently our production chains have begun to be examined and vetted by third party verification programs, and we are proud of the acknowledgement and praise we are receiving. We now feel a sense of coming full circle - that it is possible to succeed in business while honoring all resources - and we are thrilled to see more and more businesses committing to these same concepts. Along with our supplier partners, our customers, and our colleagues, the circle is growing and remaining unbroken. And that is what we consider to be the Maggie’s difference.
